Protecting Canada from Beer Drinkers and Those With Dangerous Views.
The Motorhome Diaries crew were refused entry into Canada last Friday (7/24/09). Initially they were detained because they were suspected of espousing "dangerous views". Eventually the reason given was the pending charges in Jones County Mississippi for possession of beer in a dry county.

3:50pm? – Pete was asked to step up to the counter by border bureaucrat #17225. There, he was told that they wanted to determine better what he and Jason were about. He was questioned about his former business card, which listed “Crasher-in-Chief” as his title. Border bureaucrat told Pete that they were trying to determine if the views he and Jason espoused were “dangerous” and that her job was to “protect Canada.” Pete explained the mission of MHD – that they advocated a peaceful evolution. He explained that MHD was an almost real-time documentary that documented and shared stories of people advancing the freedom movement, both to give them props and also to motivate others. He touched on the impact of their meetups – connecting freedom-oriented activists and was told that that may be needed in the United States but those in Canada were quite happy. Pete explained that they had plans to meet folks in three towns and attend the Liberty Summer Seminar, so there were obviously some people in Canada pushing for more individual freedom and responsibility rather than the force that is government. He was told that some people can’t handle freedom, that “regulations are needed” to protect them. Pete questioned the double-standard of the use of cameras at the border checkpoint and inside the building and the ability of border bureaucrats to carry firearms when both were denied to him and others. The conversation continued along these lines.
» 4:00pm – Jason was led to the Interrogation Room #127 by border bureaucrat #17252, a large man who ran his hands up and down Jason’s body including his bathing suit area. But according to Canada his rights were not being violated.
» 4:10pm – Pete was also led into Interrogation Room #127 by border bureaucrat #17252. Once inside the room he was ordered to turn around and face the wall, interlace his fingers and place them on his head. He was instructed to take one step away from the wall, bend his left knee and look left while the male border bureaucrat placed his leg in-between Pete’s legs and held his fingers/hands with one hand while searching/patting/groping Pete with his other hand. This procedure was repeated to the right as well. Pete was then asked again about the pills and and about firearms on-board. Pete repeated the same info re: the pills and stated that there were no firearms nor ammunition in the vehicle.

» 7:45pm – Pete was instructed to accompany the same border bureaucrats to Interrogation Room #127. There, it was explained to him by border bureaucrat #17225 that there are two reasons why they can deny people entry into Canada: due to goods that are prohibited/deemed hazardous and due to immigration reasons. Pete was told that early on the border bureaucrats believed they would deny him and Jason entry due to the former reason, but that after searching for Motorhome Diaries online and they found it was “not as heinous as we thought at the beginning.” Pete was told that “We [the border bureaucrats] were given reasons to go further [hold Pete and Jason and continue the investigation].” Border bureaucrat specifically mentioned the “flyer that talked about escape” [one of the topics covered by an Alliance for the Libertarian Left pamphlet] and the “anarchist signs.” The border bureaucrat then explained that, per the immigration rationale, Pete was being detained due to 36.2.c of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which notes that entry can be denied due to “committing an act outside Canada that is an offence [sic] in the place where it was committed and that, if committed in Canada, would constitute an indictable offence [sic] under an Act of Parliament.” The acts that were referenced came from a FBI print-out (ID #MS05956188) that noted that Pete had been charged in Jones County Mississippi for possession of beer in a dry county. On that document (which Pete was shown but not allowed to keep) that lone offense was listed as the charge. There was one statute cited. Yet in the remarks both this charge and “possession of firearms across state lines” was noted. Pete pointed out that there was only one statute listed, which obviously wasn’t applicable to two charges, underscoring his point that he was only charged with one thing – the possession of beer in a dry county. Pete further explained that, while deputies of the Jones County Sheriff’s Department had threatened to involve the ATF in the case due to his firearms but that he was never charged for them, and that he had could prove as much by getting the Appearance Bond out of MARV that he received when he was released from the Jones County Adult Detention Facility. Border bureaucrat #17225 responded that she was going by what the FBI printout noted. Pete encouraged her to call the Jones County Adult Detention Facility (who’s number was listed on the sheet) but #17225 declined. Pete noted that he had only been charged, not convicted and noted that the burden was on the State to prove him guilty. He was told “No. The burden for this is on your shoulders.” Pete was told that if he is found guilty in Jones County then after five years pass after the end of that sentence he can petition the consulate for permission to enter Canada or he could wait ten years (if it’s the only accusation during those ten years) and it would be expunged. The border bureaucrat #17225 noted that in her previous conversation with Jason she had been told that some friends of friends knew some people in Canadian government and that if and when Pete and Jason attempted to cross the border again it would help their chances to have an invitation from such people. Pete was also told that if he and Jason had a different image - “If you wore a tie” – they likely wouldn’t’ have been questioned/investigated so heavily. Pete was presented with a document that had been printed out. It cited “Paragraph 42(1) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations.” Border bureaucrat #17258 had signed under the statement that read “I am allowing you to withdraw your application to enter Canada and to leave Canada without delay.” Pete was told that he could sign under the statement “I hereby voluntarily withdraw my application to enter Canada and agree to leave Canada without delay.” He asked what the punishment for refusal to sign was and was informed that it would be noted in his file but would not increase any other penalties. Pete refused to sign.

Instead of replacing deadly force, the taser has become the first "tool" used by police in any situation. Rather than using common sense or any rational judgement police tase away and ask questions later.
Officers who used pepper spray and a Taser to remove a man from a store bathroom found out only later he was deaf and mentally disabled and didn't understand they wanted him to open the door, police said today.
A spokesman for the Mobile, Alabama police department said the officers' actions were justified because the man was armed with a potential weapon: an umbrella. But relatives of Antonio Love, 37, have asked for a formal investigation and said they plan to sue both the police and the store.
"I want justice," Love's mother, Phyllis Love, said today.
The woman said her son hears only faintly, has the mental capacity of a 10-year-old and didn't realise that it was the police who were trying enter the bathroom.
Antonio Love, in a written statement and in a television interview given in sign language about the confrontation, said he had a badly upset stomach on Friday and went into a Dollar General store to use the restroom.
Police spokesman Christopher Levy said today store workers called police complaining that a man had been in the bathroom for more than an hour with the door locked. Officers knocked on the door and identified themselves, but the person didn't respond. Officers used a tire iron to open the door, but the man pushed back to keep it shut. Officers sprayed pepper spray through a crack trying to subdue the man, Levy said. They shot the man with a Taser when they finally got inside, he said.

Metrodome Next? How About Metrodome Take It or Build Your Own
In the perfect example of Bastiat's "What is Seen and What is Not Seen" the Minnesota Vikings and the Metropolitan Sports Commission continue their push for a new taxpayer funded stadium. The reasons given for the stadium are the seen reasons of tax revenues and jobs. The stadium supporters of course ignore the tax revenues and jobs that would be generated if the taxpayers pockets weren't picked to support the rich owner and his rich players.

With the economy in the tank and state government awash in red ink, a new home for the Minnesota Vikings will be a hard sell at the Legislature in 2010.
So Roy Terwilliger wants to change the conversation.
"It's not about a new Vikings stadium. It's much bigger than that," the chairman of the Minnesota Sports Facilities Commission said in an interview last week. The Vikings open training camp on Thursday.
"It's more about how we make certain that we have a year-round, multipurpose stadium for the entire state of Minnesota for years to come and do it in an economical way," Terwilliger said.
So the commission is pushing to rebuild the Dome into a new, $954 million retractable-roof stadium on the current downtown Minneapolis site.
"We're calling it 'Metrodome Next,' " Terwilliger said.
Vikings owner Zygi Wilf has offered to foot $250 million of the bill, leaving taxpayers, one way or another, to pay the rest.
More importantly, Terwilliger said, the commission will intensify its efforts to inform the public about the benefits of a new stadium. If the public backs a stadium, he said, their elected officials will follow.
A public relations effort has been under way since 2007. Terwilliger said the commission has presented its case at public hearings in 17 outstate cities, and he has given speeches to more than 75 civic and business organizations.
Among the benefits he cites are that professional sports in the Metrodome, which was built without any state funding, had generated $246 million in tax revenue through 2008, including $234 million to the state, according to an analysis funded by the commission. The Vikings were the largest source of that tax revenue, generating $126 million.
The analysis also projected a new stadium would produce 13,400 jobs, including 8,000 construction jobs.
"Once people are acquainted with all the facts, then it becomes a case of how do we solve the problem," Terwilliger said.

I kind of came up with the idea of this tour by seeing what was going on in this country, and how basically what our esteemed president is doing at the moment is bailing out irresponsible corporations for their business actions and empowering the people that are already taking out of the system without putting into the system and lining a bunch of pockets of friends. And it really didn't do anything for the average American who really needed the help.
Government already has more control than what they're supposed to have as per the original document that created it all, that has created something that up and until pretty recently was the envy of the entire world.

Schiff says that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac should be dismantled and the government needs to get out of the business of guaranteeing mortgages. Schiff says the lesson of the failure of Fannie and Freddie is that the government is incompetent.

When the US invaded Iraq in 2003, many accused it of wanting to get its hands on Iraqi oil. Last month that chance came - by means of open bidding - when Iraq held an auction to allow foreign companies to help develop eight oil and gas fields. But seven of the eight failed to attract bids favourable enough to meet Iraq's tough conditions and no bids were accepted from US firms. Iraq gets almost 90 per cent of its revenue from oil exports, so why is the Iraqi government not doing more to develop the country's oil reserves and why are US companies not getting in on the act?

The stimulus package the U.S. Congress is completing would raise the government’s commitment to solving the financial crisis to $9.7 trillion, enough to pay off more than 90 percent of the nation’s home mortgages.
The Federal Reserve, Treasury Department and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation have lent or spent almost $3 trillion over the past two years and pledged up to $5.7 trillion more. The Senate is to vote this week on an economic-stimulus measure of at least $780 billion. It would need to be reconciled with an $819 billion plan the House approved last month.
Only the stimulus bill to be approved this week, the $700 billion Troubled Asset Relief Program passed four months ago and $168 billion in tax cuts and rebates enacted in 2008 have been voted on by lawmakers. The remaining $8 trillion is in lending programs and guarantees, almost all under the Fed and FDIC. Recipients’ names have not been disclosed.

Healthcare is a Good, Not a Right
Political philosopher Richard Weaver famously and correctly stated that ideas have consequences. Take for example ideas about rights versus goods. Natural law states that people have rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. A good is something you work for and earn. It might be a need, like food, but more “goods” seem to be becoming “rights” in our culture, and this has troubling consequences. It might seem harmless enough to decide that people have a right to things like education, employment, housing or healthcare. But if we look a little further into the consequences, we can see that the workings of the community and economy are thrown wildly off balance when people accept those ideas.
First of all, other people must pay for things like healthcare. Those people have bills to pay and families to support, just as you do. If there is a “right” to healthcare, you must force the providers of those goods, or others, to serve you.
Obviously, if healthcare providers were suddenly considered outright slaves to healthcare consumers, our medical schools would quickly empty. As the government continues to convince us that healthcare is a right instead of a good, it also very generously agrees to step in as middle man. Politicians can be very good at making it sound as if healthcare will be free for everybody. Nothing could be further from the truth. The administration doesn’t want you to think too much about how hospitals will be funded, or how you will somehow get something for nothing in the healthcare arena. We are asked to just trust the politicians. Somehow it will all work out.
Universal Healthcare never quite works out the way the people are led to believe before implementing it. Citizens in countries with nationalized healthcare never would have accepted this system had they known upfront about the rationing of care and the long lines.
As bureaucrats take over medicine, costs go up and quality goes down because doctors spend more and more of their time on paperwork and less time helping patients. As costs skyrocket, as they always do when inefficient bureaucrats take the reins, government will need to confiscate more and more money from an already foundering economy to somehow pay the bills. As we have seen many times, the more money and power that government has, the more power it will abuse. The frightening aspect of all this is that cutting costs, which they will inevitably do, could very well mean denying vital services. And since participation will be mandatory, no legal alternatives will be available.
The government will be paying the bills, forcing doctors and hospitals to dance more and more to the government’s tune. Having to subject our health to this bureaucratic insanity and mismanagement is possibly the biggest danger we face. The great irony is that in turning the good of healthcare into a right, your life and liberty are put in jeopardy.
Instead of further removing healthcare from the market, we should return to a true free market in healthcare, one that empowers individuals, not bureaucrats, with control of healthcare dollars. My bill HR 1495 the Comprehensive Healthcare Reform Act provides tax credits and medical savings accounts designed to do just that.

Fed Independence or Fed Secrecy?
Last week I was very pleased that hearings were held on the independence of the Federal Reserve system. My bill HR 1207, known as the Federal Reserve Transparency Act, was discussed at length, as well as the general question of whether or not the Federal Reserve should continue to operate independently.
The public is demanding transparency in government like never before. A majority of the House has cosponsored HR 1207. Yet, Senator Jim DeMint’s heroic efforts to attach it to another piece of legislation elicited intense opposition by the Senate leadership.
The hearings on Capitol Hill provided us with a great deal of information about the types of arguments that will be levied against meaningful transparency and how the secretive central bankers will defend the status quo that is so beneficial to them.
Claims are made that auditing the Fed would compromise its independence. However, by independence, they really mean secrecy. The Fed clearly cherishes its vast power to create and spend trillions of dollars, diluting the value of every other dollar in circulation, making deals with other central banks, and bailing out cronies, all to the detriment of the taxpayer, and to the enrichment of themselves. I am happy to challenge this type of “independence”.
They claim the Fed is endowed with special intellectual abilities with which to control the market and that central bankers magically know what the market needs. We should just trust them. This is patently ridiculous. The market is a complex and intricate thing. No one knows what the market needs other than the market itself. It sends signals, such as prices, that should be reacted to and respected, not thwarted and controlled. Bankers are not all-knowing and cannot ignore the rules of supply and demand. They might act as if they are, but their manipulation of the market just ends up throwing it wildly off balance, which gives us the boom and bust cycles.
They claim the Fed must remain apolitical. No organization is apolitical that relies on the President to appoint the Chairman. In fact, it is subject to the worst sort of politics – power to create trillions of dollars and affect the value of every dollar in the country without the accountability of direct elections or meaningful oversight! The Fed typically enacts monetary policy that is favorable to particular administrations close to elections, to the detriment of long term considerations. They do this partly because of the political appointee process for the Chairmanship.
The only accountability the Federal Reserve has is ultimately to Congress, which granted its charter and can revoke it at any time. It is Congress’s constitutional duty to protect the value of the money, and they have abdicated this responsibility for far too long. This was the issue that got me involved in politics 35 years ago. It is very encouraging to finally see the issue getting some needed exposure and traction. It is regrettable that it took a crisis of this magnitude to get a serious debate on this issue.

Gaza's Beaches Polluted With Sewage

The American people have rejected the REAL ID Act, and the national ID card it would create. The politicians claim they can fix REAL ID by replacing it with something called the PASS ID, to be enacted by the PASS Act, S. 1261.
The PASS Act is a fraud. PASS ID is REAL ID by another name. Jim Harper at the Cato Institute has done a fabulous job of dissecting all the frauds involved in the PASS Act. If you care about the details then we highly recommend that you read his short analysis.
We're going to focus on just one detail here. One fear about REAL ID is that you would need it to have a job, or do anything really. But what if you were denied a REAL ID because of mistaken information or some bureaucratic blunder? Think, for instance, of all the non-terrorists who have ended up on the terrorist watch list. In that case...
You would become a non-person.
To address this concern the PASS Act would enable you to access and change your own personal information. Sounds good, right, but think again...
What you can access to change, others can access to steal.
In fact, a terrorist could probably do it, and maybe even get a PASS ID with which to commit a terrorist act using your identity.
In other words, a REAL ID, or a PASS ID, which we supposedly need in order to protect us from terrorism, could actually become a tool for terrorists.
This is what happens when politicians and bureaucrats try to devise vast, complex, top-down schemes to protect us from every conceivable danger and problem. Such ambitions are utopian and ultimately harmful.
We agree with the late great Helen Keller, who again provides our quote of the day (we have used this one before, and we'll use it again): "Security is mostly superstition."
It's a simple fact -- the world is full of dangers, and we'll never be rid of them all. We must focus our efforts to protect ourselves on the things that really matter. Some dangers are significant, but most are not. We assert that...
The danger posed by terrorism is probably temporary and extremely insignificant compared to other risks we face daily, like lightening strikes, automobile accidents. and warring drug gangs. By contrast...
Huge, and permanent, dangers are posed by centralized, government databases and national ID cards. Any such scheme will ensnare all of us in endless complications, many of which we cannot now imagine.
Tell your congressional employees to repeal the REAL ID Act and reject the PASS Act.
Use your personal comments to point out that the drive for an electronic national ID system is inherently contradictory, because measures to protect citizens from being harmed by the system will make it easier for terrorists to exploit the system, while attempts to protect the system from terrorists will end up harming innocent citizens.

DeMint Exposes the Hypocrisy of Democratic Leadership in Regards to the Bill to Audit the Federal Reserve
Senator Jim DeMint (Republican-South Carolina) was blocked by Senate Democrat Leadership from having a vote on his amendment to audit the Federal Reserve, based on a bill authored by Congressman Ron Paul (Republican-Texas) in the House, H.R. 1207, and Senator Bernie Sanders (Democrat-Vermont) in the Senate, S. 604.

Senate Leadership Blocks Audit of Federal Reserve
On Monday the leadership of the Senate blocked an amendment to a Senate bill that would have required an audit of the Federal Reserve.

Earlier today, the first shot in our battle to pass Audit the Fed through the U.S. Senate was fired on the Senate floor by Senator Jim DeMint of South Carolina.
Senator DeMint, who has a well-deserved reputation for taking the battle to the other side in the Senate, once again proved why he is such a valuable ally in our fight to bring transparency and accountability to the Federal Reserve.
A little while ago, the Senate voted to pass HR 2918, the Legislative Branch Appropriations Act. This $3 billion bill contains, among many other things, provisions for GAO audits on certain agencies.
Seizing on a chance to take quick action to bring Audit the Fed up for a vote, and with the GAO provisions in mind, Senator DeMint attached the full text of S 604, the Senate version of Ron Paul's Audit the Fed bill, to HR 2918 as Senate Amendment 1367 before it was considered for final passage.
However, Senate Democrats refused to even allow a vote on the amendment! That's right. The internationalist, Fed-loving elite in the Senate used a parliamentary tactic to shut down DeMint's amendment.
After Senator DeMint brought Audit the Fed to the floor, Senator Ben Nelson of Nebraska raised a "point of order" to prevent a vote, claiming that the amendment violated Senate Rule 16 by "legislating" on an appropriations bill. The Senate president agreed, and the amendment was shot down.
Senator DeMint did not back down, though, and directly challenged Senate leadership by pointing out the other GAO audits contained in the bill. As Senator DeMint listed them off, the Senate president was forced to agree with Senator DeMint that each one he described, all of which would be left in for final passage, also violated Senate Rule 16.
Which tells us at least one thing: the problem wasn't with "legislating" on the bill or violating Senate Rules (which is commonly done). Shooting down the amendment was about preventing a thorough audit of the Federal Reserve for the first time in its history!
Senate leadership is hoping this issue will just fade away so they can get on to what they deem to be more "important" business, like dictating what kind of healthcare plan you and I can carry or passing destructive Cap-and-Tax legislation.
But the American people deserve answers on what the Fed has done with trillions of our tax dollars and what they are committing us and future generations to as part of their secret deals with foreign central banks and governments.
The leadership decided today to turn their backs on transparency, but our fight is just beginning.
As Senator DeMint made clear on the floor, the Audit the Fed bill has wide bipartisan support. He rightly warned the Senate that even if they delay today, they WILL have to deal with the issue on the floor.
It is up to you and me to back up Senator DeMint's words by making sure the momentum continues to build and the bill comes up for a final vote.
The rejection of the Audit amendment is just the first battle in our war. Now is the time to really put the pressure on the U.S. Senate to Audit the Fed!
Senator DeMint fired the opening salvo and showcased the hypocrisy of the Senate for allowing other GAO audits to be included in the bill while refusing to even allow a vote on Fed transparency.
Again, we're just getting started. Senator DeMint will keep fighting to pass Audit the Fed on its own or as an amendment, and we need to continue putting pressure on our senators to do everything in their power to achieve a floor vote!

We Should Reflect on the Meaning of Independence Day
Here is a commentary I wrote that was published in the Rochester Post Bulletin on June 29, 2007. I have posted it on my blog the last two years, but I think it is worth repeating (I did update the number of years from last year):
This Fourth of July as we go about our activities with family and friends, we all should take some time to reflect upon the true significance of the holiday. Yes, it is a celebration of our country's Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, but it is much more than that. It is a celebration of an idea that was revolutionary then and unfortunately is still considered revolutionary by many today.
The Declaration of Independence boldly states: "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness -- That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government ..."
This revolutionary declaration is the foundation of American political thought and has inspired millions around the world in the 233 years since Thomas Jefferson wrote it. The common view at the time was that rights were granted by the government to the people. Instead, Jefferson declared there is a higher law, "unalienable Rights," that every human has by their mere existence. Government only has those powers granted to it by the people, to protect these natural rights.
Unfortunately today it seems that many have rejected Jefferson's declaration and have returned to the antiquated idea of government supremacy. They define patriotism as supporting the government. Most disheartening of all are the discussions about the Constitution.
Political commentators, major party politicians and Supreme Court nominees talk about our "constitutional rights," as if the government were granting us our rights through the Constitution.
Nothing could be farther from the truth. In the Constitution, the founders again make it abundantly clear that all power comes from the people. The Constitution is a document where the people have granted the government certain limited powers: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Further, the Ninth Amendment declares: "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people." Because so many Americans have forgotten the fundamental idea behind the founding of this Country, today we have people willing to abandon our basic liberties, giving the government the power to do anything it wants.
They falsely assume that invasions of liberty and privacy will not affect them, though history has shown otherwise. Too many today are willing to abandon freedom for the illusion of security.
Benjamin Franklin said: "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
This Fourth of July please take time out from the celebrations to reflect on the founders' vision for America.
This Fourth of July as we go about our activities with family and friends, we all should take some time to reflect upon the true significance of the holiday. Yes, it is a celebration of our country's Declaration of Independence from Great Britain, but it is much more than that. It is a celebration of an idea that was revolutionary then and unfortunately is still considered revolutionary by many today.
The Declaration of Independence boldly states: "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness -- That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government ..."
This revolutionary declaration is the foundation of American political thought and has inspired millions around the world in the 233 years since Thomas Jefferson wrote it. The common view at the time was that rights were granted by the government to the people. Instead, Jefferson declared there is a higher law, "unalienable Rights," that every human has by their mere existence. Government only has those powers granted to it by the people, to protect these natural rights.
Unfortunately today it seems that many have rejected Jefferson's declaration and have returned to the antiquated idea of government supremacy. They define patriotism as supporting the government. Most disheartening of all are the discussions about the Constitution.

The Adam Kokesh Revolution
Some of the same people behind the Ron Paul Revolution idea are now supporting Adam Kokesh's campaign for Congress.
No One Could Be This Stupid
Tom Woods, author of Meltdown, appeared on Brian and the Judge to discuss the "stimulus plans" and all the other government takeovers of the economy. Woods calls it a Red Bull Stimulus, because it doesn't really stimulate the economy, it just uses up what little energy that remains in the economy.
Woods believes many of the politicians know this, but they just care about the near term and getting reelected. Woods says he gets many calls when he appears on talk shows from people who ask if the politicians are trying to destroy the economy on purpose because "no one could be this stupid."

Education Spending Facts
We are constantly told by the education establishment that they need more money. We hear about "cuts", not keeping up with inflation and so on. We are told if we spent more things would improve.
Well according to the data kept by the US Department of Education those claims are out and out lies. Spending per pupil increased by almost 350% from 1961 to 2004. Inflation and capital costs have been taken out. So per pupil expenditures are not increasing because of inflation or building, but because more is being spent in the day to day operatons.

School districts had total expenditures of approximately $528.7 billion in fiscal year 2006, including about $449.6 billion in current expenditures for public elementary and secondary education. Of the remaining expenditures, $57.4 billion was spent on capital outlay, $14.3 billion on interest payments on debt, and $7.4 billion on other programs (programs such as community services and adult education, which are not a part of public elementary and secondary education).
After adjustment for inflation, current expenditures per student in fall enrollment in public schools rose during the 1980s, remained stable during the first part of the 1990s, and rose again after 1992–93. There was an increase of 37 percent from 1980–81 to 1990–91; an increase of less than 1 percent from 1990–91 to 1994–95 (which resulted from small decreases at the beginning of this period, followed by small increases after 1992–93); and an increase of 25 percent from 1994–95 to 2005–06. In 2005–06, current expenditures per student in fall enrollment were $9,154 in unadjusted dollars.

Republicans Make Republicans Look Bad
Jack Hunter looks at the hypocrisy involved in the Mark Sanford affair. Hunter points out that those Republicans who immediately denounced Sanford for his affair seem to have no problems with the likes of Rudy "911" Giuliani or Newt Gingrich and their multiple marital indiscretions. Sanford's affair was merely an excuse to go after a non-neocon Republican.
